Current Research Projects

Ion-Selective and Spectrophotometric Methods of Water Quality Monitoring at the James. H. Barrow Field Station

This is ongoing research and monitoring project. The project monitors the water in the pools of the White-Winged Wood Ducks housed at the Waterfowl Conservation Center at the James H. Barrow Field Station as an effort to correlate water nutrients with duck habits and health. This project has been expanded to other areas at the field station to collect data at various points to give a baseline data set for water quality. The project is also being developed as a research-in-the-classroom module for general chemistry students, with the first trial-module underway in the current semester. In addition to being developed for undergraduates, the project is being looked at as supplementary laboratory/field work for area high school chemistry students.

Design and Synthesis of Arborol-Appended Transition Metal Bisterpyridine Complexes

Arborols are known for their ability to form thermally reversible aqueous gels, while transition metal bisterpyridines are known for their optical absorption properties, although the optical properties are useful only in solution. The goal of the project is to combine the two components to create a transition metal complex capable of acting as a stable light-harvesting device void of solution, allowing for more utilitarian applications. The arborol-appended terpyridine backbone is being constructed, and current work focuses on optimizing chemical handle to connect the arborol to the terpyridine.

Synthesis of Brominated Transistion-Metal Bisterpyridine Complexes

Transition-metal complexes are well known for their photophysical properties, notably the ability to participate in energy and/or electron transfer reactions in properly constructed systems. The majority of bisterpyridine complexes are appended off the 4' position of the central pyridine moiety. This project focuses on making chemical "handles" in varying positions on the terpyridine and studying the physical, electronic and photophysical properties.
