Bread and Soup Nights
Since 1983 Hiram College has hosted an annual Bread and Soup meal each winter where students, faculty and community members can purchase a simple bread and soup meal on Thursday evenings in the Kennedy Center, eat in solidarity with those who have fewer food options than most of us, and benefit those in need in our community. $1 from each meal benefits a local food related non-profit. Recent recipients have been The Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community, King Kennedy after school program, the Nelson-Garrettsville Food Cupboard and Hiram House Camp.
The program has served to purchase food for local food banks, provide healthy snacks to youth, and served the dual benefit of purchasing livestock which stay at Hiram House Camp for the summer, educating youth about where their food comes from, with the animals later being donated to the Hiram Farm which is an organic farm serving adults on the Autism spectrum.
